After a lot of research and many conversations with the founders of Löwenzahn Organics, we are happy to finally present their baby formula as the newest addition to our shop.
Löwenzahn Organics was created by a team of parents in Germany. It’s a brand that stands for a modern and passionate approach to baby food products. The co-founders Liz and Carmen say about themselves that since becoming mothers, their perspective on nutrition changed.
They realized that no baby food on the market met their high demands and requirements for a healthy start into life for their little ones. This is why they are so passionate about their products (and we are, too!).
“We started Löwenzahn Organics out of the experiences and desires we knew from being moms ourselves - based on the desire to provide ecologically responsible food for babies and toddlers.”
The team at Löwenzahn Organics is convinced that gut health makes plays an important role in determining a baby’s physical and mental development. Their baby formula is composed according to the latest scientific nutritional knowledge.
Their formulas contain high-quality EU organic certified raw materials. They strongly believe in sustainable and organic farming without pesticides and in food products sourced from nature. When it comes to ingredients, they keep the list short: “Less is more. That’s why we simply leave anything unnecessary out of our products.“
The products are developed in line with strict environmental guidelines and their safety is ensured through independent laboratory tests.
The team at Löwenzahn Organics makes no compromises when it comes to the quality of their baby formula. Their ingredients are sourced from EU Organic certified production which meets stringent regulations. Some of these regulations include, species-appropriate animal welfare (which, among other things, means organic fodder and access to open air and grazing).
Additionally, it prohibits the use of synthetic chemical pesticides (which can help minimize the risk of immune system disorders). The high-quality organic raw materials are also free from genetically modified organics (GMOs) and their derivates, as well as preventive antibiotics.
Löwenzahn’s baby formula has been developed to provide babies with all the nutrients they need, combined with maximum digestibility. As a source of energy, they use mainly organic lactose (milk sugar). For their pre infant formula, no other carbohydrate such a starch or maltodextrin is added.
This makes the formula especially easily digestible and similar to breastmilk. In their follow-on formulas, when babies have reached an age where they can digest more complex carbohydrates, they include maltodextrin and starch. These can help your little one to feel satisfied for longer.
DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that helps with brain, motor skill and retina development. It must be added in European baby formulas as part of a European Commission requirement that came into force in February of 2020. This EU regulation requires the addition of DHA of at least 20mg per 100 kcal. This is not enough for Löwenzahn. For the benefit of your baby, they have chosen to add even more DHA to their baby formula than required (21.36mg / 100kcal).
When it comes to DHA source, Löwenzahn Organics takes a different approach than most manufacturers. Instead of obtaining DHA from fish oil, they use a plant-based source for DHA: algae oil. This oil comes from the controlled cultivation of microalgae from an unpolluted environment.
Many babies find that plant-based DHA tastes better and it's more beneficial from an ecological perspective because fish get their DHA from consuming algae. So why not get these beneficial fatty acids straight from the source? We think that’s great!
The organic Löwenzahn baby formula contains a fatty acid profile made up of palm, sunflower, and rapeseed oil, all from organic production. The palm oil is from sustainable cultivation that is Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified. The palmitic acid it contains is important for babies’ lipometabolism and facilitates calcium absorption.
Löwenzahn Organics adds prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) in their baby formula, which are also present in a similar form in breast milk. They are fibers that serve as food for the good bacteria (probiotics) in the gut, which aids in the digestive process.
The baby formula also contains important Vitamin D, which is crucial for the immune system. For babies and toddlers, the intake of vitamin D through food is suitable and recommended (additionally to supplementing).
In addition to frequent analyses in their production facilities, the Löwenzahn philosophy includes additional independent laboratory tests. In these tests they analyze their entire product range for any harmful substances, such as mineral oils, pesticides and mycotoxins.
A great feature that makes them truly stand out from other brands is that Löwenzahn Organics offers complete transparency when it comes to their ingredients and supply chain. There is a transparency code on the packaging of each of their products. This code can be entered into the tracking tool on their website. It lets customers trace the origin of the raw materials used.
Löwenzahn Organics baby formula comes in three stages: One infant formula (pre) and two follow-on formulas (stages 2 & 3). Each one has a slightly different nutrient composition that is adjusted to the respective age of the baby. This ensures that your baby receives optimal nutrition throughout their first months and years.
All stages contain:
Stage Pre is an infant formula that is appropriate from birth onwards. It contains only lactose as a source of energy, which ensures optimal digestibility. Newborns have a sensitive digestive system that cannot yet handle more complex carbohydrates. That’s why, just as in breastmilk, only lactose is used as a source of carbohydrate.
Stage 2 is a follow-on formula that is appropriate from the 6th month onwards. It is specially adjusted for babies at the age of starting to eat a mixed diet. Other than stage pre, stage 2 has a small amount of starch and maltodextrin added. These additional sources of carbohydrates give your baby energy and can help them feel satiated longer.
Stage 3 is a follow-on formula that can be fed after the 10th month. This formula has starch and maltodextrin added as well (in a slightly higher amount than stage 2), and a slightly different nutrient composition that ensures for optimal nutrition next to a balanced diet of mixed solid foods.
Whether in real life or on social media, the team at Löwenzahn Organics is committed to establishing greater tolerance and understanding when it comes to parenting.
According to a study that Löwenzahn Organics conducted in 2018 with more than 1000 mothers, every second one felt like a bad mother because of criticism on her parenting style she received from others. Three out of four said they had already been criticized at some point for the way they treat their child - without being asked (now there’s even a term for it: mom-shaming). 86% of the surveyed moms would like to see more tolerance and support among mothers.
Under the hashtag #coolmomsdontjudge they introduced an initiative for more tolerance and support. This campaign wants to encourage mothers to support each other and step away from criticism. Instead of criticism between mothers, Löwenzahn Organics wants to encourage parents to stand up for each other. To help every mom make decisions with self-confidence and self-assurance.
With their hashtag #noShameInYourFeedingGame on Instagram, they encourage moms to tell their personal feeding story, whether they breastfeed, pump, formula feed, or maybe all of the above. This is an amazing way for moms to share experiences and tips among each other.
In 2019, the German consumer magazine “Stiftung Öko-Test” tested Löwenzahn Organics Pre infant formula, next to other pre formulas on the German market. But before we tell you about the results, let’s first establish what Stiftung Öko-Test is and why it’s such a big deal.
The shelves in stores and supermarkets are bursting with products. One and the same product is available from numerous different manufacturers. As a consumer, it’s hard to see the differences and know which product is worth buying and which isn’t. That's where Öko-Test comes in - a consumer magazine that tests a vast range of consumer products and services. In total, they have already tested more than 100.000 products over a span of 26 years.
What’s amazing about this magazine is that is completely independent of industry, government or advertisers. The magazine places great emphasis on testing objectively, neutrally and with great expertise.
This is how they provide consumers with valuable information through their test results, and why this magazine enjoys a lot of trust among the German population and has great influence in Germany. Consumers often shy away from buying products that get a bad Öko-Test rating, and reversely have a lot of trust in products with a good rating.
Öko-Test examines all products in laboratories. They test for their effectiveness and for potentially harmful substances. The top priority is always the question of health risks, as well as environmental factors. And the test criteria are regularly becoming stricter. Öko-Test is even stricter in its evaluation than the German legislation is.
When the results are being evaluated, the products are being rated in various categories. There are 5 options for the overall rating of the products: “Very good”, “good”, “satisfactory”, “sufficient” and “deficient”.
In May 2019, a total of 16 infant milk formulas based on cow's milk were tested for substances of health concern that are frequently found in powdered baby formula.
Additionally, the preparation and warning information on the packaging was assessed, for example whether the manufacturers gave the impression in their advertising statements that the product was preferable to breastfeeding.
Out of 16 cow’s milk based pre formulas tested, a total of 5 scored a "good" rating, none rated “very good”. Löwenzahn Organic’s pre infant formula was among these 5 best rated products.
Of course, the question that immediately arises: Why "only" a good rating, why not very good? In fact, not a single milk formula received a very good rating in the test.
This is because the main problem of all tested pre milk formulas is the mineral oil residues such as MOSH/POSH and MOAH, which can pass from the packaging materials into the food, but are unfortunately unavoidable. All formulas tested showed these traces - in some cases even elevated or strongly to very strongly elevated values.
These trace elements are the only reason for the downgrading of the Löwenzahn Organics Pre infant formula. However, since then, the independent laboratories of Löwenzahn Organics (which analyze all their products at regular intervals) did not find any detectable transfer of MOSH/POSH to the food.
Löwenzahn Organics is a brand with a passionate and modern approach to baby formula. Their baby formula is EU organic certified and includes a short list of only the best ingredients, with absolutely no compromises.
The formula contains valuable ingredients such as prebiotic fiber and organic lactose. Beyond that, they made a conscious decision to include ingredients from responsible and valuable sources (such as DHA from algae oil instead of fish oil, and palm oil only from sustainable and RSPO certified farming).
Not only do they produce high quality organic baby food according to the latest science, but they also love to engage with parents and are building a supportive community of moms and dads. With their #coolmomsdontjudge campaign they set an example for more tolerance and support, which is something we can all learn from.
We are extremely enthusiastic about this brand and can’t wait to hear what you think!
